Vilsack prepares to run for president, make it less obvious
Says, governors' duties extend to foreign policy

WASHINGTON --
Gov. Tom Vilsack made a trip to
Washington Tuesday, speaking about Iraq and his role in foreign
policy.
Vilsack spoke at the
Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. He said
governors across the nation have grown increasingly knowledgeable about foreign
affairs as their jobs have evolved to include issues such as homeland security
and international
investment.
Vilsack said
he's not at a disadvantage dealing with international issues -- a critical point
if the Democratic governor decides to run for the White House in
2008.
On the topic of Iraq,
Vilsack subtly criticized potential 2008 rivals such as Sens. John Kerry and
Hillary Clinton by questioning whether Congress asked the tough questions before
the troops went to war.
He also cautioned against exiting
Iraq hastily and leaving an unstable country to its own fate.
